On December 21, 2011 the results of the Kentucky High School Feedback Report were made public.  The purpose of the report is to provide comparative information about students who graduated from Kentucky’s public high schools in 2009-2010 and subsequently enrolled in postsecondary institutions at any point during the 2010-2011 academic year.

More than 63% of Kentucky public high school graduates enrolled in college according to the report---the highest percentage on record.  Five Kentucky high schools had a college attendance rate of 90% or better, with Paintsville High School (97.7%) the highest college-going rate statewide.

The Feedback report was produced as a joint effort by the Kentucky P-20 Data Collaborative, the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE), Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE), Education Professional Standards Board (EPSB), the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet, and the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA).

This report provides the most complete and accurate data about college going that exists for Kentucky’s public high schools. It follows students who graduated from high school in 2010 and identifies how many went on to enroll in a college or university during the 2010-2011 academic year.

These data are not collected from a survey or self-reported by the student. These data are provided by matching actual student level electronic records from the Kentucky Department of Education with official enrollment records from the Council on Postsecondary Education for students attending public two- and four-year institutions and independent colleges and universities and from the National Student Clearinghouse with the assistance of KHEAA for other private and out-of-state institutions.

Recognition of students, selection of a new Chairman and Vice-Chairman, approval of a draft budget and comprehensive improvement plan, and good reports from results of the Explore and Plan tests were just some of the highlights of the January Paintsville Independent School Board meeting held Monday evening.
The meeting began with Superintendent Coy Samons honoring the Board members on behalf of himself, the Paintsville Independent Schools' community, and the Kentucky School Board Association for the members hard work and dedication as January is School Board Members Recognition Month in Kentucky.
The Board members then honored junior Sarah Akers for her selection to the KMEA All-District Band, and the Sixth Grade Academic Team for again winning the Governor's Cup Academic Showcase held in December.
Members chose Eddie Cornett as Chairman and Joe Porter as Vice-Chairman for all meetings held in 2012.  Regular meetings will be the second Monday of each month, except for July 16 and Oct. 15, and starting times were moved back to 6:00 pm instead of 7:00 pm.
The Board approved an early draft budget for 2012-13 calling for a balanced general fund of $6,205,629, and following comments about improvements from both school principals, approved a Comprehensive District Improvement Plan for 2011-12.
Instructional Supervisor Katie Webb reported results of the EXPLORE Test given to Paintsville's 7th and 8th graders, and the PLAN Test given to the 9th and 10th grade students earlier this school year.
Paintsville's 8th graders scored well above the national average in all categories for all 8th graders on the EXPLORE Test, and Paintsville's 7th graders also scored higher than the nation's 8th graders in all categories except math.
On the PLAN Test given nationally to 10th graders, Paintsville's 10th and 9th graders both scored higher than the national average in all categories except math.
Webb also reported results from the December practice A.C.T. Test for juniors which produced an average score of 21.8.  All juniors in Kentucky must take the A.C.T. Test annually at state expense, given on March 6 this year.
The Paintsville Middle School will host the Middle School District Governor's Cup competition on Sat. Jan. 21, and the Elementary School gym on Sun. Jan. 22 will again be the site of the annual Christa Burchett Blood Drive from noon to 6:00 pm.
The Board approved out-of-state trips for the PHS Softball Team to compete in a tournament at Kingsport, TN on March 30-April 1, and for the AP and Algebra 1 students, and the 6th-8th grade Math and Science TD students, to attend King's Island in May.
All Board members were present for the approximately one hour regular meeting.

The 76th Annual Kentucky School Boards Association Conference will be held on February 3-5, at the Galt House East, in Louisville, Kentucky. District involvement is at the heart of what makes KSBA events a success, for this reason, every school district is invited to design a banner for display. The banners represent Kentucky students’ interpretation of the conference theme. The theme for the 2012 conference is “College/career readiness: Kentucky’s real 2012 Olympics,” linking the worldwide attention on the Olympic Games in London, England and Kentucky schools’ push to move more high school graduates to enter college and/or the job market adequately prepared.

Paintsville art students, Ariana Doderer and Cassie Callaham, were responsible for creating this year’s banner submission: Paintsville Independent Schools-Standing on the Podium of Success for 121 Years. The banner depicts a tiger receiving the ultimate gold medal – a diploma from Paintsville High School!  Ms. Coleman, Paintsville’s Art Instructor commented, “It is so wonderful when you have students who you can rely on to complete a task. They would spend their own time to ensure we met the deadline and the result is wonderful!”

A highlight of every KSBA conference, the banners are a very important contribution to the event, reminding attendees of schools’ primary focus -- learning and learners.
