🎨📸 In Miss Ariana Doderer’s Photography Class… Students are diving into Still Life Photography this week! On Monday, they explored the art of composition and lighting through still life setups. Then on Wednesday, they’ll take it a step further by bringing in three objects that represent them — creating a personal still life story through their photos. Each class begins with a quick sketch of their planned arrangement, helping students pre-visualize their composition before shooting. With the help of a partner, they’ll capture 3–5 creative shots of their setup, experimenting with lighting, direction, and perspective to bring their stories to life through the lens. We can’t wait to see their artistic vision shine! 🌟📷

🎨⚙️ Balancing Science and Creativity! 🧠✨

Mr. Andy Hazlette’s 3rd grade scientists are beginning their OpenSciEd Forces and Motion Unit 3, Lesson 1 with an exciting anchoring phenomenon:
“How do these sculptures balance and move?”

Students explored balancing and moving sculptures, noticing and wondering about how these creations can stay upright and even move in puzzling ways. They:
🌀 Built and diagrammed their own model sculptures
🧩 Categorized sculptures and everyday objects
💭 Generated initial ideas for how forces help them balance and move
🗂️ Created a Driving Question Board filled with ideas for future investigations

Through this lesson, students discovered that a sculpture with many parts can be put together to balance — and even move — in surprising ways!

Hands-on learning and creative problem-solving are alive and well at Paintsville Elementary! 💙🐾

🧬 Exploring Genetics in 8th Grade Science! 🔬

Mrs. Madison Newsome’s 8th grade scientists are tackling their driving question:
“Why don't offspring always look like their parents or siblings?”

Through their investigation, students:
📊 Compare proportions of different genotypes
🧩 Use simple mathematical models to predict genetic outcomes

They discovered that:
✅ The genotypes of parents help predict the proportions of offspring genotypes and phenotypes
✅ Differences in traits arise because alleles separate into different sex cells and recombine in new ways at fertilization
✅ These patterns explain why every living thing is unique!

Curiosity, inquiry, and scientific thinking are in full swing at Paintsville Junior High! 💙🐾

🛑 October is Bullying Prevention Month

At Paintsville Independent Schools, we believe every student deserves a safe and supportive learning environment. During Bullying Prevention Month, we want to raise awareness about ways students, families, and community members can help stop bullying — and report it when it happens.

One important tool available across Kentucky is the S.T.O.P.! Tipline (Safety Tipline, Online Prevention) at https://safeschools.ky.gov/

What is S.T.O.P.! Tipline?
• It’s an anonymous way to report unsafe situations, including bullying, harassment, threats, weapons, drugs, or other concerns.
• Tips are sent to designated school and state-level safety officials who review and respond appropriately.
• It is not a substitute for emergency response — in an emergency, always call 911.

How to Use the S.T.O.P.! Tipline:
1. Call the tipline at (866) 393-6659
2. Or fill out the online form via Kentucky’s Safe Schools at https://safeschools.ky.gov/
3. You may choose to leave contact information if you want someone to follow up, or remain completely anonymous.
4. Provide as much detail as possible — what happened, where, when, and who was involved — so responders can properly assess the situation.
5. After submitting, safety personnel review the tip and take appropriate action while protecting confidentiality.

PES and PHS science teachers Allison King, Andy Hazlette, Madison Newsome, and Derek Newsome used KDE’s Science Unit Internalization Protocol during today’s PLCs. This protocol helps teachers deeply study and understand a unit’s design, learning goals, and assessments so they can plan effective instruction that meets student needs.
