🔬🧅 Microscope Magic in Lesson 11! 🧫✨
Yesterday and today our 7th grade scientists got hands-on with Lesson 11 of OpenSciEd Unit 6.6: Cells & Systems, diving deep into the world of cells—literally!

Students made their own slide samples and used microscopes to examine red onion skin cells, getting an up-close look at:
✅ Cell walls
✅ Nuclei
✅ The building blocks of life!

Why does this matter? Because understanding how cells are structured helps us make sense of how body systems function—and how everything works together to keep us alive.

🧠 Big ideas: Structure, function, and the amazing complexity of even the simplest cells!

The SAT is a bring your own device exam (except personal chromebooks are not allowed). You can bring an iPad, MacBook, PHS school-managed chromebook, etc. The exam is 2 hours and 14 minutes long and composed of tests in English, math, and reading.

The next national testing date is November 8th and the deadline to register is THIS FRIDAY, October 24th. See Mrs. Baldwin for a fee waiver if you log in to your CollegeBoard account and don't see fee waivers automatically applied. Click the link below to register yourself.

🚌 National School Bus Safety Week 🚌

This week we join schools across the nation in recognizing National School Bus Safety Week (October 20–24, 2025).

Our school bus drivers play a vital role in keeping students safe each and every day. We encourage students, families, and the community to review safe riding and driving practices that help ensure all children arrive at school and home safely.

🚍 Always stop when the red lights are flashing.
🚸 Watch for students entering and exiting the bus.
✅ Talk to your child about safe behavior while riding.

Let’s work together to keep our Tigers safe on the road! 💙🐅

Mrs. King’s 6th grade scientists analyzed classroom light meter data from all three of her classes! Students discussed the patterns they observed and identified a few outliers in their results. While others found this investigation challenging, our students handled it like pros — and their light meters worked great! Productive struggle = learning!

📚 Mrs. Toole’s 5th-grade social studies students explored primary and secondary sources through an engaging station learning activity!

Students rotated through stations to compare different types of sources, deepen their understanding of historical evidence, and practice thinking like historians. 🏛️💡

🧬 Mrs. Newsome’s middle school scientists are engaging in a gallery walk to give peer feedback on their pedigree charts as part of their study on the genetics of inheritance!

Students are analyzing each other’s work, sharing insights, and strengthening their understanding of how traits are passed from one generation to the next. 👩‍🔬👨‍🔬

We love seeing collaboration and critical thinking in action! 💡 #PaintsvilleTigers #STEMinAction #HandsOnLearning #Genetics

Mrs. Shasta Howard’s 4th-grade scientists took part in a hands-on mining simulation today as they explored nonrenewable resources!

Each student received a cookie to represent a piece of land and used simple tools to “mine” for chocolate chips—symbolizing the extraction of natural resources. After mining, students reflected on the environmental impact of resource use and the challenges of restoring the land. 🌎💡

What a fun and meaningful way to learn about how human activities affect our planet! 🌱 #PaintsvilleTigers #HandsOnLearning #STEMinAction #OpenSciEd

Mr. Hazlett’s 3rd-grade scientists are diving into the next lesson in their Forces and Interactions unit!

Students are exploring how sculptures can balance by investigating symmetry and asymmetry—and how both play a role in keeping objects stable. In the photo, they’re discussing examples of symmetry found in everyday objects as they work to answer the big question: “How can we build a sculpture that will balance?”

We love seeing our young engineers think, design, and experiment like real scientists! 💡⚖️ #PaintsvilleTigers #OpenSciEd #ForcesAndInteractions #STEMinAction

We’re grateful to partner with local mental health providers who help support the emotional and behavioral well-being of our students.
Frontier Behavioral Health now joins our network of school-based therapy options available to families within Paintsville Independent Schools.

Families are encouraged to explore the services that best meet their child’s needs. Our goal is to ensure that all students have access to quality mental health support. You may contact the schools or the number on the flyer for more information.

🎨📸 In Miss Ariana Doderer’s Photography Class… Students are diving into Still Life Photography this week! On Monday, they explored the art of composition and lighting through still life setups. Then on Wednesday, they’ll take it a step further by bringing in three objects that represent them — creating a personal still life story through their photos. Each class begins with a quick sketch of their planned arrangement, helping students pre-visualize their composition before shooting. With the help of a partner, they’ll capture 3–5 creative shots of their setup, experimenting with lighting, direction, and perspective to bring their stories to life through the lens. We can’t wait to see their artistic vision shine! 🌟📷

🎨⚙️ Balancing Science and Creativity! 🧠✨

Mr. Andy Hazlette’s 3rd grade scientists are beginning their OpenSciEd Forces and Motion Unit 3, Lesson 1 with an exciting anchoring phenomenon:
“How do these sculptures balance and move?”

Students explored balancing and moving sculptures, noticing and wondering about how these creations can stay upright and even move in puzzling ways. They:
🌀 Built and diagrammed their own model sculptures
🧩 Categorized sculptures and everyday objects
💭 Generated initial ideas for how forces help them balance and move
🗂️ Created a Driving Question Board filled with ideas for future investigations

Through this lesson, students discovered that a sculpture with many parts can be put together to balance — and even move — in surprising ways!

Hands-on learning and creative problem-solving are alive and well at Paintsville Elementary! 💙🐾
