Paintsville High School is now a national SAT test site, meaning you can now take the SAT at PHS on national testing dates! The SAT is a bring your own device exam (except personal chromebooks are not allowed). You can bring an iPad, MacBook, PHS school-managed chromebook, etc. The exam is 2 hours and 14 minutes long and composed of tests in English, math, and reading.

Mrs. King’s 6th grade scientists analyzed classroom light meter data from all three of her classes! Students discussed the patterns they observed and identified a few outliers in their results. While others found this investigation challenging, our students handled it like pros — and their light meters worked great! Productive struggle = learning!
Mrs. Shasta Howard’s 4th grade scientists are investigating how solar flowers respond to different light settings as they explore solar energy, a renewable resource!
Our 3rd grade students in Mr. Hazlette’s science class are continuing their study of forces and motion by building Category A sculptures — sculptures designed to balance! Students used rulers, support blocks, and 3D shapes to put their learning into action.

Students are diving into Still Life Photography this week!
On Monday, they explored the art of composition and lighting through still life setups. Then on Wednesday, they’ll take it a step further by bringing in three objects that represent them — creating a personal still life story through their photos.
Each class begins with a quick sketch of their planned arrangement, helping students pre-visualize their composition before shooting. With the help of a partner, they’ll capture 3–5 creative shots of their setup, experimenting with lighting, direction, and perspective to bring their stories to life through the lens.
We can’t wait to see their artistic vision shine! 🌟📷

Mrs. Madison Newsome’s 8th grade scientists are tackling their driving question:
“Why don't offspring always look like their parents or siblings?”
Through their investigation, students:
📊 Compare proportions of different genotypes
🧩 Use simple mathematical models to predict genetic outcomes
They discovered that:
✅ The genotypes of parents help predict the proportions of offspring genotypes and phenotypes
✅ Differences in traits arise because alleles separate into different sex cells and recombine in new ways at fertilization
✅ These patterns explain why every living thing is unique!
